Exemplary Crimes is a collection of 87 micro-stories —some as short as seven words— in which Max Aub turns murder into a mundane anecdote told with a dark humour that disarms. First published in 1957 in Mexico City, the book is presented here in an edition by Media Vaca (Begoña Lobo and Vicente Ferrer), co-published with the Max Aub Foundation (2001), illustrated by 31 artists —press collaborators, cartoonists, children's book illustrators and poster artists— who each offer their own visual take on the crimes. "We were standing at the kerb, waiting for the traffic to pass. The cars kept coming at full speed, one after the other, their headlights shining right up against one another. All I had to do was give a little nudge. We’d been married for twelve years. It was all for nothing."
