Open Books (South Korea) commissioned me to design thethe Roberto Bolaño Collection. The project covered the collection's visual identity and the concept for each front and back cover.
The challenge: a visual identity of its own for the collection, with a graphic impact in line with Bolaño's writing.
The process: I started by studying the author's existing iconography and reading his books closely, and I built the collection around the idea of the expanded image. The front cover is not a separate piece: when the book is opened flat, the back cover illustration continues the front and adds a narrative twist to the original idea. A crescent moon runs through the whole collection as a common thread.
For *2666*, a novel centered on the murders of women in Santa Teresa, the front cover shows a woman sleeping on a galloping horse. Opened flat, the back cover reveals that the horse's hindquarters are Death itself, brandishing its scythe. ( Note-on-the-process)
