Born in Sagua la Grande, in central Cuba, I began drawing for a provincial publication and worked my way up to one of Cuba’s leading political satire publications, drawing for all the island’s major media. Cuban critics rank me among the 20 most important graphic humorists of 20th-century Cuba and consider me a reference in political cartooning and in the Cuban art of the 1980s.
In 1991 I moved to Spain, and since then I have worked with its leading newspapers, including El Mundo, La Vanguardia and El Cultural, and with Le Monde Diplomatique and Courrier International. In 2001 I founded Ajubelstudio, widening my work to design, books and digital projects. My work has appeared in TIME, The Guardian and The Boston Globe, and has received more than 120 awards, including two Bronze Medals and an Honorable Mention at the Society for News Design’s Best of Newspaper Design (1994), the Bologna Ragazzi Award and Spain’s National Illustration Award.
I now work from La Pobla del Duc, near Valencia, in a house among fields and mountains. If you have something to tell me that’s interesting for both of us, shall we talk?
